Depression is much more than simply being unhappy. Clinical depression is a complex mood disorder caused by various factors, including genetic predisposition, personality, stress, and brain chemistry.
Some forms of depression may develop under unique circumstances. For instance, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Postpartum depression.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are not interchangeable terms. According to the National Institute on Aging, dementia—an umbrella term that is often associated with the cognitive decline of aging—is a type of brain disorder that impacts performance of daily activities and communication.
Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Center for Disease Control, is a specific form of dementia making up seventy-five percent of all dementia cases. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include impaired speech, confusion, difficulty remembering recent events or conversations, apathy, depression, impaired judgment, disorientation, and behavioral changes. In the advanced stages, there is difficulty speaking and swallowing, and loss of mobility.

Our guest speaker is Toni Curtis a certified birth doula, lactation counselor and childbirth educator. Her work in maternal support began in 1996 when she volunteered as a peer educator while in high school. In addition to teaching classes about safe sex practices, she supported teen mothers who needed prenatal care, labor and delivery support and postpartum care. For years, she continued to stand with and advocate for young mothers who were underrepresented and in many cases, simply not heard.
